Aluminium Sliding Doors Price: 9 Best 2026 Options

By Kiki Projects 15 September 2026 9 min read

The aluminium sliding doors price you end up paying is driven by three things: how wide the opening is, how many panels slide, and whether the glass is standard or safety-rated. Get those three straight and the quotes in front of you start looking comparable.

Below are nine configurations that cover almost every residential patio opening in South Africa, with 2026 price ranges for frame-only and supplied-and-fitted. The numbers are market ranges, not one supplier’s list.

Key takeaways

  • A 2-panel 1800mm slider runs roughly R6,500 to R11,000 fitted.
  • A 4-panel 3600mm stacking door runs roughly R15,000 to R26,000 fitted.
  • Price scales with glazed area, so doubling the width more than doubles the cost.
  • Sliding doors legally need safety glass. Anyone quoting 4mm float for a door is cutting a corner.
  • Stacking doors cost more than sliders because every panel needs its own track and rollers.

Door height is almost always 2100mm, so width and panel count do the work. The table covers both the frame on its own and the installed figure on a straightforward opening.

All at 2100mm high with 6.38mm laminated safety glass, bronze or white powder coat. Charcoal and special colours add roughly 8 to 15 percent. Excludes structural work and making good.

Ranges compiled from South African fabricator and installer pricing, September 2026. Openings needing a new lintel or structural alteration sit above these figures.

Sliding, stacking or folding: what the aluminium sliding doors price buys

The three formats look similar in a brochure and behave very differently in a house.

Sliding

Two panels, one slides behind the other. You only ever get half the opening clear. Cheapest, simplest, fewest moving parts.

Stacking

Three or more panels slide and stack against one end. You get most of the opening clear. More track, more rollers, more money.

Folding

Panels concertina and fold back. Almost the whole opening clears. The most expensive and the most hardware-dependent.

Fixed plus slider

One fixed pane, one sliding. Cheapest way to get a wide glazed wall if you do not need the full width to open.

Choose sliding when

  • Budget is the deciding factor
  • The opening is under 2400mm
  • You want the fewest things that can fail
  • The door is used daily and must be reliable

Choose stacking when

  • The opening is 2400mm or wider
  • You entertain and want the wall to disappear
  • Indoor and outdoor floor levels are flush
  • You accept more maintenance on the tracks

Glass specification and what the rules require

This is where cheap quotes hide. Any glazing in a door, or within 500mm of floor level, must be safety glass. That means laminated or toughened, not ordinary float glass.

Laminated 6.38mm is the normal choice for sliding doors. It holds together when it breaks, it cuts noise, and it is harder to get through from outside. Toughened glass is an alternative but shatters into fragments rather than staying in the frame. The requirement sits in the national building regulations, published by the South African Bureau of Standards, and a fabricator quoting float glass for a door is either inexperienced or cutting cost somewhere you will not see.

Check the quote

If the glass line says only “clear glass” with no thickness and no mention of laminated or toughened, ask. The difference between 4mm float and 6.38mm laminated on a 3000mm door is several thousand rand, and it is the single easiest place to make a quote look competitive.

Why hardware decides how long the door lasts

Frames rarely fail. Rollers, tracks and locks fail constantly, and they are what you actually touch every day.

Rollers

Stainless or nylon-on-stainless, adjustable, rated for the panel weight. Budget rollers on a heavy laminated panel flat-spot within two years and the door starts dragging.

The bottom track

It collects sand, and in Cape Town it collects a lot of it. A track with a removable insert can be cleaned. A track without one wears until the door jumps.

The lock

A multi-point lock engages top and bottom as well as the centre. A single centre latch on a 2400mm door can be levered open.

Brush seals

Cheap to replace, and the thing that stops wind-driven rain and dust. Ask whether replacement seals are available for the system before you buy it.

What installation adds to the aluminium sliding doors price

On a like-for-like swap where the opening already exists and is sound, fitting adds roughly R1,800 to R4,500 depending on width and access. That covers removal, disposal, levelling, fixing, sealing and making good the plaster.

Creating a new opening is a different job. You are into a structural lintel, propping, brickwork, and making good inside and out, which typically adds R8,000 to R20,000 on top depending on the span and whether the wall is load bearing. If that is the route, it usually makes sense to fold it into a wider project. Our guide to home renovation costs in Cape Town covers how those numbers stack up.

Two details are worth insisting on. The first is the threshold detail: a flush threshold looks better but needs a proper drainage channel outside, or driving rain finds its way in. The second is that the frame must be packed and fixed to the structure, not foamed into place. Foam alone will move.

Getting comparable quotes

To compare aluminium sliding doors price quotes properly, ask every supplier for the same five lines and the comparison does itself: overall frame size, number of panels and which ones slide, glass type and thickness, the powder-coat colour and finish, and whether removal, sealing and making good are included.

A quote that says “3m aluminium sliding door, R14,500” tells you nothing. A quote that says “3000 x 2100, 3-panel stacking, 6.38mm laminated, bronze powder coat, supplied and fitted including removal and making good” can be checked against the table above in ten seconds.

If you are still choosing between materials and formats across the whole house, the aluminium windows sizes and prices guide covers the window side, and standard window sizes South Africa explains the opening ladder both follow. Completed door installations are in our project gallery.

What drives the aluminium sliding doors price up without you noticing

Two quotes for the same opening can differ by R8,000, and the gap is almost never the frame itself. It is the things sitting quietly in the specification.

Colour. Bronze and white are stock powder coats and cost nothing extra. Charcoal, matt black and anything from the Duco range means a dedicated coating run, adding 8 to 15 percent. On a 4800mm stacking door that is real money.

Glass upgrades. Moving from 6.38mm laminated to a low-emissivity or performance glass can add 40 to 70 percent to the glazing line. On a west-facing Cape Town patio that takes full afternoon sun it is often worth it, but it should be a decision rather than a surprise.

Panel weight and reinforcement. Once a panel passes about 1200mm wide, the frame needs a heavier section to stay square. A supplier quoting a light section on a wide panel is quoting a door that will drop out of alignment inside a few years.

Access. A ground-floor patio with a driveway alongside is a two-person lift. A first-floor balcony reached through a finished house means protection, more labour and sometimes a crane. Installers price that in, and they should.

Making good. Removing an old timber or steel door frame nearly always damages the plaster. Ask whether the quote includes plastering and painting back to a finished state, or stops at a clean opening with a rough edge.

Looking after a sliding door in a coastal climate

Cape Town is hard on sliding doors for one simple reason: wind-blown sand. It gets into the bottom track, turns into grinding paste under the rollers, and quietly destroys hardware that would otherwise last fifteen years.

  1. Vacuum the bottom track monthly. This single habit does more than everything else combined.
  2. Wash the frames with plain water and mild soap twice a year, more often within two kilometres of the sea.
  3. Never oil the track. Oil holds sand. Use a dry silicone spray on the rollers only.
  4. Check the brush seals each spring and replace them when they stop touching the glass.
  5. If the door starts dragging, adjust the rollers before the track wears. Once the track is scored, it is a frame job.

The same salt-air logic applies across every aluminium element on the house, which the coastal maintenance guide covers in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average aluminium sliding doors price in South Africa?

A standard 1800mm two-panel slider runs roughly R6,500 to R11,000 supplied and fitted in 2026. Wider stacking configurations climb steeply, with a 3600mm four-panel door typically between R15,000 and R26,000.

How much is a 3m aluminium sliding door?

A 3000 x 2100 three-panel stacking door costs about R8,900 to R14,600 for the unit alone, or R11,000 to R19,000 supplied and fitted on an existing sound opening.

Is a stacking door more expensive than a sliding door?

Yes, typically 20 to 35 percent more at the same width. Each additional panel needs its own track channel, rollers and interlock, and the frame has to be heavier to carry the extra weight.

Do aluminium sliding doors need safety glass?

Yes. Glazing in a door or within 500mm of floor level must be laminated or toughened safety glass under the national building regulations. Laminated 6.38mm is the usual specification.

How long do aluminium sliding doors last?

The frame will outlast the house if it is powder-coated and washed occasionally. Rollers and brush seals are consumables and typically need replacing every eight to twelve years, sooner on a sandy or coastal site.

Can I replace a wooden sliding door with aluminium?

Usually yes, and the opening is often already the right size. The reveal depth differs, so the frame may sit slightly differently, and the old timber frame has to come out fully rather than being clad over.

Why do sliding doors get stiff?

Nine times out of ten it is grit in the bottom track wearing the rollers, not a frame problem. Vacuum the track monthly and the rollers last years longer, which is the cheapest maintenance in the house.
